How do I speed up my dial up connection?

I have a dial-up connection and I know I'm not with the times, but other means of home internet access are too expensive for me. (I've looked around and I know the prices) Do you know of free ways to optimize my internet, whether by settings or programs? I'm currently using Corecom with Speedstream.
